One-click unsubscribe

One-click unsubscribe allows subscribers to opt out of email communication directly from their email client. Instead of being redirected to a separate unsubscribe page or confirmation form, this feature lets them unsubscribe with a single click (hence the name).

This feature is currently supported mainly by Gmail and Yahoo. Other email providers are expected to follow.

Transactional emails do not have one-click unsubscribe headers.

The Unsubscribe link

In your mailbox the Unsubscribe link can look like this:

Or this inside the mail, like this:

New requirements for bulk senders

Starting in February 2024, Google introduced additional requirements for bulk senders. These requirements apply to senders who send 5,000 or more emails per day to Gmail accounts. Bulk senders must:

  • Authenticate outgoing email
  • Avoid sending unsolicited or unwanted emails
  • Provide a simple unsubscribe option, including one-click unsubscribe

If you have sent 5,000 emails in a single day at any point in the past, Google classifies you as a bulk sender permanently. This means the requirements continue to apply even if your current sending volume is lower.

Unsubscribe links will expire six months after the link is created and will no longer work.

Between 50% and 57% of all email unsubscribes now happen through this one-click functionality. This means that many customers won’t ever use or see a custom unsubscribe page, and unsubscribe reasons won’t be collected for them.

Supporting better practices

One-click unsubscribe improves the subscriber experience and supports better email deliverability practices in the following ways:

User-friendly experience

One-click unsubscribe respects your subscribers time and preferences. It removes the need to search for unsubscribe links or go through multiple confirmation steps.

Better email hygiene

When subscribers can easily manage their inboxes, they are more likely to keep receiving emails they actually want to engage with, including yours.

Regulatory compliance

Regulations such as CAN-SPAM in the United States and GDPR in Europe require businesses to make it easy for recipients to opt out of email communication.

Fewer spam complaints

If subscribers can't easily unsubscribe, they are more likely to mark emails as spam. One-click unsubscribe gives recipients a faster and clearer alternative, helping to protect your sender reputation. Although one-click unsubscribe may increase unsubscribe numbers at first, it often reduces spam complaints significantly over time.

More engaged subscribers

When it is easy to unsubscribe, the subscribers who remain are more likely to be genuinely interested in your communication. This can lead to higher engagement and better campaign performance.

Best practices

A typical unsubscribe rate for a healthy email campaign is between 0.2% and 0.5%. Consistently higher unsubscribe rates may indicate issues with list quality, targeting, or email frequency. To maintain good deliverability and subscriber trust, we recommend that you:

  • Send emails your subscribers expect and want to receive
  • Clearly explain what subscribers are signing up for
  • Regularly clean and segment your subscriber lists
  • Respect unsubscribe requests immediately

Why unsubscribes are better than spam complaints

An unsubscribe usually indicates that:

  • The subscriber originally gave consent
  • The sender provides a visible and accessible unsubscribe option
  • The interaction may still count as positive engagement

A spam complaint may indicate that:

  • Consent was not properly collected or maintained
  • The unsubscribe option was difficult to find
  • The sender experience created frustration for the recipient

Mailbox providers track spam complaints closely, and high complaint rates can negatively affect your sender reputation and deliverability.

Since subscribers are used to finding unsubscribe options at the bottom of an email, keeping the footer link creates a familiar experience and provides a fallback if the one-click functionality is unavailable.

Common questions

Here are some common questions on this topic:

Is an unsubscribe option legally required?

Yes. Regulations such as the CAN-SPAM Act and GDPR require commercial emails to include a clear way for recipients to opt out of communication. Google and Yahoo also require one-click unsubscribe for bulk senders.

What's the difference between traditional unsubscribe and one-click?

Traditional unsubscribe links usually redirect subscribers to a separate webpage where they confirm their choice. One-click unsubscribe allows subscribers to unsubscribe directly from the email interface without additional steps.
