Each step in an onsite message has behavior settings that control when and how it's shown, for example what happens when a visitor clicks the minimized widget, or whether the message opens by itself after a delay. Exceptions decide what visitors see when they can't complete the message. This article describes both.
Minimized and maximized
An onsite message can be shown in two sizes:
- Minimized: a small widget that stays on the page, such as a tab in a corner of the screen.
- Maximized: a larger popup that shows your main content, such as a form.
In the flow, the Minimized step is the minimized widget, and the Form step is the maximized popup. Most templates start minimized and open the form when the visitor clicks the widget. In the Contact update template, the form comes first, so the message opens maximized.
Open the behavior settings
- In the flow, hover over the Minimized or Form step.
- Select the lightning icon. The behavior settings open in a side panel.
- Make your changes and select Save.
To move a step up or down in the flow, hover over it and select the arrow icon.
Minimized behavior
| Setting | What it does |
|---|---|
| On click (optional) | What happens when a visitor clicks the minimized widget. Choose Maximize onsite message to open the popup, Redirect to landing page to send the visitor to the linked landing page, or Disable click. |
| Always show on trigger | Shows the minimized widget every time the message is triggered. |
| Allow minimizing completed onsite message | Lets visitors minimize the message again after they've completed it. |
| Hide when minimized on desktop | Hides the minimized widget on desktop. |
| Hide when minimized on mobile | Hides the minimized widget on mobile. |
Maximized behavior
The behavior settings for the Form step decide when the maximized popup opens automatically, and how the form works.
| Setting | What it does |
|---|---|
| Enable data collection | Makes a data collection form the first step of the popup. Turn it off if the message doesn't need to collect any information. |
| Allow visitor to update fields that are already populated on the contact card | Lets known contacts change information that's already on their contact card. |
| Allow visitor to change fields that have existing prefill values | Lets visitors change fields that are filled in in advance. |
| Automatically maximize after delay | Opens the popup by itself after a set time. |
| Automatically maximize after idle time | Opens the popup by itself when the visitor has been inactive for a set time. |
| Automatically maximize after page visits | Opens the popup by itself after the visitor has viewed a set number of pages. |
| Require email verification (under More settings > Email verification) | Asks visitors to verify their email address. |
You can't use Automatically maximize after delay and Automatically maximize after idle time together. Turning one on turns the other off.
Exceptions
Exceptions are the messages visitors see when they can't complete the message, for example because they're already a member, the message has expired, or an error occurs. They sit next to the flow and are shared by the whole message, so a change here applies everywhere the exception can appear.
To edit them, hover over Exceptions next to the flow. Select the gear icon.
The panel is split into two groups:
- Visitor flow: An existing contact/member is stopped from finishing and Onsite message has reached the expiry date.
- Applies to the whole message: An undefined error happens.
Some exceptions only appear when they're relevant to the message's setup, for example when the message gives a reward.
