Contacts

Contacts are the backbone of a retailer's data in Engage. Contacts represent the retailer's customers - those individuals who buy products, or have signed up for marketing emails, or have otherwise been added to the Engage database.

"Contact" is the technical term for the data representation of an individual in your Engage database. You might also see them being referred to as members, customers or end-users. These mean basically the same thing.

Contact attributes

Every contact has a number of attributes, such as email, name, date of birth, and many more. One of these will be the unique attribute used to create the contact (often it's their email). Upon creation in Engage, a contact is then assigned a unique contactId. This is in the form of a GUID, which looks like this:

2e40b702-2767-4abe-ae99-aa510108e22f

When interacting with the Engage API, this contactId is what you'll use to identify a contact.

What contacts are used for

Contacts are used for all interactions between an end-user and Engage, for example:

  • Sending emails
  • Registering orders
  • Advancing in challenges
  • Handling returns

Viewing a contact

In the Engage UI, you can search for and view the details of any contact in your database. This is done on a page referred to as the "contact card".
