Introduction to website activity tracking

Get to know your customers even better based on how they behave on your website. By tracking visitor's web activity, you can calculate which products they are interested in and act on abandoned carts or abandoned sessions, using automations.

Visitor identification

Website activity can be tracked for both anonymous and identified visitors. When an anonymous visitor is identified, previously collected activity from the same browser can be connected to their customer profile.

See How visitor identification works to learn more about anonymous tracking, identification and returning visitors.

For implementation details, see Identification and cookies in the Developer documentation.

Abandoned carts

The tracking script enables abandoned cart functionality. By registering every state of a user’s cart, Customer Engagement can receive information about cart abandonment and use this to trigger automations.

With the abandoned cart feature, you can trigger automations to send communication to customers who have left something in their carts. Speak to your Account Manager to find out more.

Abandoned browse

As for abandoned carts, the tracking script enables abandoned browse functionality. The site sends product view and cart events to Customer Engagement through the tracking script (or API). Customer Engagement can therefore detect when a session is abandoned, and nothing has been added to the cart and then trigger an automation.

Products of interest

By tracking which products a user interacts with, Customer Engagement can calculate a list of products of interest. This can then be used in, for example, segmentation. The data will also be part of the algorithm that calculates Customer Engagement's product recommendations.
