Here is how to create a new challenge and customize the settings to suit your purposes.
Creating a new challenge
- Navigate to Challenges
- Go to Loyalty > Challenges and click New challenge to create challenge.
- Add a name and an optional description and click Save to go forward.
- Start by setting the number of checkpoints or activities that the participants must complete to successfully finish the challenge.
You now have the option to make the challenge recurring. Toggle the Recurring switch under the Checkpoints section. This is ideal for ongoing reward structures like “Buy 5, get 1 free” or repeat engagement incentives.
- Toggle on Require contact approval to enable your customers to manually agree to join the challenge. Otherwise, the challenge will be activated as soon as the customer fulfils the criteria.
- Toggle on Use checkpoints images if you want to upload images to illustrate the checkpoints. These images can be shown in any email module and displayed on “My pages”, for example. The maximum file size allowed for an image is 5 MB.
-
Use the Validity settings to control how long the challenge is available—either for everyone or per individual participant. You have two options:
Set challenge start and end dates: Define a fixed time window when the challenge is active. This is useful for aligning with specific campaigns, seasonal events, or promotional periods.
Set participant deadline: Limit the amount of time each participant has to complete the challenge, starting from the moment they join. This is ideal for rolling challenges where each customer has their own timeline.
- Once you’ve configured and saved all required settings, click Activate in the top-right corner to publish the challenge.
Now you can use the challenge in automations, triggered by e.g., an interaction such as a product review or social media interaction. If you’re using the challenge as a stamp card for purchases, however, you need to do some additional set-up.
- Toggle on Purchase settings.
-
To connect a challenge to customer purchases, select how checkpoints should be awarded. You can choose between:
Per purchase occasion: Award a checkpoint for each qualifying receipt or purchase transaction.
Per purchased product: Award a checkpoint for every qualifying product in a transaction. You can filter by brand, product category, eco-friendly tags, or article number.
Use these settings to align the challenge with specific sales goals or product focus areas.
- Finish by clicking Save.
- When the challenge is ready , make sure to Activate it.
Example:
"Buy 5 products, get one free" — a 5-checkpoint challenge set to recurring.
If a customer buys 20 qualifying items in one receipt, only 15 checkpoints will be counted. This results in 3 completed challenges — the maximum allowed per receipt.
If a customer buys 15 items on one receipt, then 5 on another, they’ll get checkpoints for all 20 items.
Now set up an automation to follow up on and communicate with the participants. There’s both an entry trigger specifically for when your customers makes progress in a challenge, and an activity you can use with any trigger you want.
